Everything you need to know about Kurdistan Residence Permit


It’s important to know all the details, and costs related to having a residence permit in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, whether its for yourself personally, or if you’re an employer and have foreign employees.

We first need to take a step back, and dive into Kurdistan visa, because after all, you can only get a residence permit if you have a valid visa. In order to be sure, make sure to show your visa documents to an experienced lawyer, or an officer at the directory of residence permit in any city in the Kurdistan Region, to see if your visa can be converted into a residence permit.

Here are the steps you need to take, or things you need to have for a residence permit:

  • The person needs to be sponsored by a company and be registered as their employee. The company needs to make sure that their papers are up to date, taxes have been paid, they have a valid and open file both at the directory of social security and residence permit office. The company can then legally register that expat as their employee, and apply for their residence permit.
  • The company needs to make sure that their company meets the 75%-25% rule, where for each foreign employee, they need to have at least 3 local employees registered in social security.
  • The company needs to make sure that they pay your social security every month, otherwise there will be difficulties when you want to renew your residence permit by the time it expires.
  • Here are some costs related to residence permit:
    • 500,000-1,000,000 IQD for first time applicants, depending on nationality
    • 175,000 IQD for issuing the card itself
    • 85,000 IQD blood test (mainly checks for HIV and Hepatitis)
    • 55,000 IQD postal fees
    • 375,000 IQD life insurance
    • 20,000 IQD daily penalty, if you delay the process
    • Lawyer fees
